IBM 1401
The 1401 was a small character machine with variable word length.
It was intended to replace installations of punched card equipment.
Originally available with 1400 to 4000 characters of memory, a later
external core unit was developed for up to 16 000 characters.
The cycle time was 11.5 microseconds per character.
