IBM 650

IBM 650 at Bridgeport Brass

IBM's commercial first generation drum-based computer. The 650 was probably the most successful first generation machine. It uses "bi-quinary" decimal arithmetic with a 10-digit word length. The drum stores 20 000 digits and rotates at 12 500 RPM, making the 650 one of the fastest of the early serial computers.
